Before you pack even one box, create a simple recordkeeping system. Use sheet of numbered lines to write the specific contents of each box, then number the boxes to match. This will help you keep track of everything and save you time and headaches on moving day, and later, when you unpack.
This includes things like a box cutter, paper towels, trash bags, eating utensils, select cookware, power strips, phone chargers, toilet paper, tools, prescriptions, etc. The clear bin allows you to see inside; it also separates itself from all the cardboard boxes.
Photos of how your electronics are connected can help you remember how and where all the wires go when you get to your new house. Plus, it's a great way to keep kids busy while you pack.
Pick a color code for each room and label that room’s boxes accordingly. Label the door of each room at the new location with the corresponding sticker/tape so that movers know where to place the boxes.
Create a moving binder with plastic sleeves for all your important moving information. It will be your go-to guide on moving day.
For extra padding, pack your glasses and stemware in clean socks.
Change your address at least two weeks prior to moving.
Moving is a lot of work and, even if you're moving to a more affordable place, it can really drain your wallet. So why pay for moving supplies you can get for free? Estimate the number of boxes you'll need for your belongings; whatever number you end up with, multiply that number by 20 percent, just to be safe, and start hitting up your local appliance or department stores. Ask your Facebook friends if they have any boxes you can borrow. Or, try your local grocery or package store, but avoid boxes that carried frozen foods or produce as they may have water damage or food stains. And as you're unpacking your boxes in your new home, be sure to flatten out each piece of packing paper to ensure you find every little thing you packed, especially if you had help packing boxes.
Designate one drawer of a dresser for sheets and towels so that you won't have to rummage through boxes for these essentials the first night in your new home.
Pack things like your prescriptions, pet food, toothbrush and a change of clothes, in a bag for you and each person in your family.
When it comes to packing and moving your family from one home to another, you will eventually find yourself making notes to keep track of everything that needs to be done. Packing lists, moving lists, lists of people to contact... Soon you may discover that you need a list just to keep track of all the lists!
