Terminology to know:

  • Energy deregulation: The process of dividing the generation, transmission, distribution, and sales procedures, enabling multiple supply companies to vie for customers.
  • Retail electric provider (REP): REPs are the energy companies that compete with each other in deregulated regions to offer energy rates to both residential and commercial customers. They handle the provision of your energy, while the local utility manages the delivery.
  • Transmission and distribution service provider (TDSP): TDSPs own or operate the equipment responsible for transmitting and distributing electricity in Texas. LP&L will function as the TDSP for Lubbock, handling the maintenance of your poles and power lines. In case of a power outage, this is the company you should contact.
  • Default retail provider: A stopgap energy provider who supplies your electricity if you do not select a retail provider or if your retail provider goes out of business during your contract term. These are assigned by utility area.

When can I sign up?

Deregulation in Lubbock is set to take effect on March 4, 2024. From Friday, January 5, 2024, onwards, Lubbock residents can initiate the process of choosing their preferred electricity provider. Residents that do not select a new provider during the presale period will receive service from one of the default retail electricity providers.

What is Energy Choice?

On March 4, 2024, specific areas in Lubbock will become part of the Texas deregulated electricity market. This allows homeowners, renters, and businesses in those areas to opt for the retail electricity provider that best suits their needs. Starting on Friday, January 5, 2024, residents in Lubbock will have the opportunity to start choosing their new electricity provider.

How do I shop for my new electricity providers?

You get to make your choice. As with any purchase, it’s helpful to do your own research. If a price looks too good to be true, it may be worth reading the fine print. In addition to price, you may consider reading some customer reviews to see what level of customer care a supplier provides. You can only sign up with one supplier at a time, but you can switch away if their service doesn’t meet your expectations.

While we believe that deregulation will add value to Lubbock consumers, we understand that a change like this can still feel overwhelming. So, we’re here to help. At Champion Energy, we want to equip you to choose a provider and plan with confidence - even if it’s not with us.
