Now that summer has come to end, it’s time to embrace the fall season and refresh on how to save on energy around the home. In the list below, we’ve pulled together some of our favorite, easy and affordable energy tips to help you save on your energy bills this fall.

1. Check your home insulation.

Heat loss through the ceiling or walls can prove to be costly, especially in the cooler months when it is important to preserve warm air from escaping. Getting a head start and inspecting your home’s insulation can help you reduce heating costs in your home.

2. Replace your lights with LED bulbs.

Lowering your energy consumption can be as easy as changing a light bulb. The initial cost is more, but LEDs use at least 75% less energy, and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting.

3. Lower your thermostat settings at night.

According to the Department of Energy, you can save up to 10% a year on heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat between 7°to 10°F for 8 hours a day from its normal setting. We recommend lowering your temperature settings before you go to sleep and changing it back to its normal settings in the morning.

4. Keep the oven door closed while it’s cooking.

Bakers beware of anyone peeking inside the oven before the food is ready. The temperature drops as much as 25 degrees each time the oven door is opened, so monitor cooking time and peek through the oven window, if possible, to check on your food.
